Italian tax code (Codice Fiscale)

The Italian tax code (Codice Fiscale), which is the citizen’s means of identification in relations with Italian authorities and public administrations, is issued by the Agenzia delle Entrate (Italian Inland Revenue Agency).

This consular office issues the Codice Fiscale only in paper format, the request for the plastic card must be indicated in the request.

Italian citizens registered with AIRE can submit their request for Codice Fiscale on the FastIT portal (see next section) or by email, to consolato.addisabeba@esteri.it, attaching:

  • the request FORM duly filled in and signed;
  • copy of valid passport;
  • in the case of a request on behalf of a minor, in addition to the above-mentioned documents, the identity documents and tax codes of both parents must be presented;
  • foreign students going to study in Italy must also attach appropriate documentation (rental contract) proving the need for a tax code prior to arrival in Italy.

The applicant will receive the paper Certificate of Attribution of the Codice Fiscale by email, normally within a week of receiving the request, provided that the request is compliant.

The plastic card, if requested, will be given to the applicant once it has been delivered by the Revenue Office.

Foreign nationals residing in the consular district requiring a Codice Fiscale must apply by submitting the relevant application form together with a copy of an identity document, either in person at the consular office during opening hours, or by sending an e-mail to consolato.addisabeba@esteri.it.

Foreign students coming to study in Italy will only receive the paper Certificate of Attribution of Fiscal Code by e-mail. Once they arrive in Italy, they will have to request the plastic card directly from the Agenzia delle Entrate.

You can download the Tax Code application form on the dedicated page.
