Request for transcription of civil status records

BIRTH

The underage children of at least one Italian citizen, even if born abroad and possibly holding another nationality, are Italian citizens. Their birth must therefore be transcribed in Italy, at the competent local authority.

The transcription of the birth certificate by the Italian local authority is a free administrative procedure that allows minors under the age of 18 to:

In order to request the transcription of a birth, the Italian citizen may apply to the Consular Office with the following documents:

  1. transcription request form, duly filled and signed (form downloadable here);
  2. original birth certificate, duly legalised and translated into Italian;
  3. photocopy of the parents’ identity documents.

Alternatively, the deed, duly legalised and translated, may be submitted directly to the Italian local authority (see art. 12, par. 11, Italian Presidential Decree 396/2000).

PLEASE NOTE: If the birth certificate is not sent to the Commune for transcription by the age of 18, the person aged 18 or over, if resident in the consular district, must submit the application for recognition of Italian nationality to this Consular Office.

 

 


 

MARRIAGE/CIVIL UNION

A marriage celebrated abroad, in order to be valid in Italy, must be transcribed at the competent Italian Commune.

The following documents must be presented for the notification of the marriage and to request its transcription:

  1. transcription request form, duly filled and signed (form downloadable here);
  2. original marriage certificate, duly legalised and translated into Italian;
  3. photocopy of the spouses’ identity documents.

Alternatively, it is possible to submit the deed, duly legalised and translated, directly to the Italian Commune (in accordance with Article 12, § 11 of Italian Presidential Decree 396/2000).

 


 

DEATH

The death of an Italian citizen abroad must be transcribed in Italy.

The following documents are required in order to register the death:

  1. transcription request form, duly filled and signed (form downloadable here);
  2. original death certificate, duly legalised and translated into italian;
  3. photocopy of the deceased’s identity document.

Alternatively, you may submit the deed, duly legalised and translated, directly to the Italian Commune of origin (see art. 12, par. 11, Italian Presidential Decree 396/2000).
