Translation and legalization of documents

Translation and legalization of documents (More information on the Italian MoFA website)

In order to be enforceable in Italy, deeds and documents issued by the Ethiopian Authorities must be legalized by the Italian Embassy in Addis Ababa (Consular Office), after being legalised by the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as Ethiopia is not a party to the Hague Convention of 5 October 1961 on the abolition of legalisation of foreign public deeds.

In order to proceed with the legalisation and certification of conformity of the translation (with the exception of documentation intended for enrolment procedures for study courses at Italian universities), interested parties must make an appointment by sending an email to consolato.addisabeba@esteri.it.

On the day of the appointment, the applicant must present him/herself at the consular office with the original document in the foreign language and the corresponding Italian translation.

It is possible to delegate another person in writing, enclosing his/her identity document, to carry out the above operations.

The above acts are subject to the payment of fees as per the Consular Tariff currently in force.

All requests for legalisations relating to documents intended for enrolment at Italian universities, such as Declarations of Value of qualifications, must be submitted to the VFS through the instructions contained in the following link: https://visa.vfsglobal.com/eth/en/ita/news/dov-legalization-appointments
