THE ITALIAN MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS, PAOLO GENTILONI, HAS VISITED ETHIOPIA ON THE 14TH AND 15TH JANUARY 2015. (16.01.2015)

The Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Paolo Gentiloni, has visited Ethiopia on the 14th and 15th January 2015.

Minister Gentiloni, accompanied by high level officials from the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, met the Prime Minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, Hailemariam Desalegn, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Teodros Adhanom, the Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Sufian Ahmed.

In these meetings, bilateral issues were discussed, both political and economical, in order to further strengthen the relations between the two countries. In light of the co-Presidency of the “IGAD Partners Forum” that Ethiopia and Italy share, the talks also concerned the main regional issues, like Somalia and South Sudan, as well as global issues of mutual interest.

In order to widen the cooperation between the two countries, the Ministers of Foreign Affairs have signed an “Executive Programme for cultural cooperation for the years 2015-2019”. Culture is indeed a fundamental component of the longstanding relations between Ethiopia and Italy, and the new agreement will provide an important tool to further strengthen the already solid bonds in this field.

As far as development cooperation is concerned, Minister Gentiloni has also signed with Minister Sufian Ahmed three new agreements: the “Drought resilience and sustainable livelihood program” (financed with 12,9 mln Euros to the Ministry of Agriculture), the “Women Economic Empowerment and Social Integration” (892.000 Euros) and the “Italian Support to the development of the health systems in Oromia and Tigray Region” (financed with 4,15 mln Euros).

The Italian Foreign Minister had also meetings at the Africa Union Headquarters with the Chairperson of the Commision, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, the Deputy Chairperson, Erastus Mwencha, and the Commissioner for Peace and Security, Smail Chergui. During these meetings, consultations were held on the bilateral political cooperation between Italy and the AU.
