- As of 3 August 2026, the paper Italian identity card will no longer be valid for international travel, regardless of the expiry date indicated on the back of the document. The Electronic Identity Card (Carta d’Identità Elettronica – CIE) will be the only identity card valid for international travel.
Applications for the Electronic Identity Card (CIE) may be submitted through the Prenot@Mi platform or by sending an email to: consolato.addisabeba@esteri.it.

- Please also note that, as of 1 June 2026, Italian citizens residing abroad and registered with AIRE may apply for an Electronic Identity Card (CIE) at any Italian municipality, as provided for by Law No. 11 of 19 January 2026.
• Please also note that, for Italian citizens 70 years of age or older, Electronic Identity Cards (CIE) issued on or after 30 July 2026 have unlimited validity.
