GENERAL INFORMATION ON “SINCE”<\/h4>\n

The “Stemming Irregular migration in Northern and Central Ethiopia \u2014 SINCE” Programme<\/strong> is funded by the European Union Trust Fund for Africa and is managed by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation through the Embassy of Italy in Addis Ababa, sided by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation \u2014 AICS<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The overall objective<\/strong> of SINCE is to contribute to reduce irregular migration from Northern and Central Ethiopia by improving the living conditions of the most vulnerable population, including potential migrants and returnees with specific focus on youth and women.<\/p>\n

The specific objective<\/strong> of SINCE is to facilitate the creation of employment opportunities for potential migrants and returnees, focusing on women and youth, in the most migration prone regions of Ethiopia (Addis Ababa, Amhara, Oromia, SNNPR and Tigray), by strengthening the capacities of Technical Vocational Training (TVET) centers and Pubic Employment Services (PES) providers, and by promoting Public Private Partnerships (PPPs) in strategic value chains.<\/p>\n

Beneficiaries<\/strong><\/p>\n

SINCE is directly addressing a total of 8.400 youth and women, potential migrants, and returnees.<\/p>\n

SINCE IMPLEMENTATION STRATEGY<\/h4>\n

The implementation of SINCE includes two main strategic pillars:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Short-term responses to facilitate wage employment to 8,200 beneficiaries<\/strong> through the provision of 41 different short term training courses <\/strong>relevant to private sectors need;<\/li>\n
  • Medium and long-term strategies, establishing 16 multi-stakeholders platforms<\/strong> to promote sustainable 145 Public -Private Partnerships.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

     <\/p>\n

    IMPLEMENTATION AREAS AND SECTORS<\/h4>\n

    The intervention areas and sectors have been identified, during an Inception Phase in close collaboration with all the relevant Ethiopian Authorities, through a socio-economic and value chain assessment carried out respectively by the International Labour Organization (ILO) and by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) on the basis of an agreement with the Embassy of Italy in Ethiopia and the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation.<\/p>\n

    Amhara, Oromia, Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples\u2019 Region (SNNPR)<\/strong> and Tigray<\/strong> have been identified as the most migration prone areas, together with the city of Addis Ababa<\/strong> (see map).<\/p>\n

    The interventions sectors are textile and garment, leather and leather products, agri-business, metal works and construction <\/strong>(see table below).<\/p>\n

    KEY STAKEHOLDERS<\/h4>\n
      \n
    • 6 Project Steering Committees <\/strong>have been set up at federal and regional level to ensure\u00a0 sustainability<\/strong> and ownership <\/strong>by the Ethiopian Government.<\/strong><\/li>\n
    • 27 TVETs <\/strong>are capacitated and strengthened to offer 39 <\/strong>demand-driven short training <\/strong>courses.<\/li>\n
    • 328 private companies <\/strong>are involved in the design of short-term trainings, host 7800 cooperative training\u00a0 <\/strong>and apprenticeships<\/strong>, participate in 16 multi-stakeholders platforms<\/strong> and sign 145 PPPs <\/strong>\u00a0with TVETs and PES\/local administrations.<\/li>\n
    • 22 Local Administrations, <\/strong>offering Public Employment Services, <\/strong>are strengthened.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      \"ILO<\/td>\nILO conducted a socio-economic assessment and is piloting a Youth Employability Service centre in Bahir Dar<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
      \"UNIDO<\/td>\nUNIDO conducted a value chain assessment and is assisting the Embassy of Italy in monitoring grant beneficiaries.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
