SIGNED AGREEMENT FOR ITALIAN CONTRIBUTION TO UNICEF OF 500,000 EUROS

A financing agreement of 500,000 Euros has been signed this morning for the Initiative “Strengthen the Civil Registration System for the Children’s Right to Identity: Identification for Development (ID)” which will be implemented in two Ethiopian regions of Oromia and SNNPR. The initiative aims at providing standardized Vital Events Registration and Certification Services in the two Regions in order to contribute to children’s right to identity to protect them from violence, abuse, exploitation and ensure their access to basic services. The activities include also the strengthening of the technical and institutional capacities of the Vital Events Registration Agency’s (VERA) of the two Regions and community sensitization campaigns.

The agreement was signed by the Ambassador of Italy in Ethiopia, Giuseppe Mistretta, and the UNICEF Country Representative Gillian Mellsop, and the Director of the Office of AICS Addis Ababa Geneva Letizia. The event was also attended by the two directors of the VERA Offices, Mr. Demiss Gebre of Oromia Region and by Ms. Aberu Nemomsa of SNNP Region, who expressed their appreciation to the support of the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation directed at strengthening the civil registration system in their respective regions.
